Abandoned train station
Our Chemical HeartsThe Abandoned train station is associated with Grace Town’s fishpond, an unusual feature whose origins connect the fictional location to two distinct real-world inspirations. The station’s documented significance lies in that blend: an image of fish occupying an abandoned space, set within a loosely imagined disused station.
The Fishpond and the Station
The station is identified with Grace Town’s fishpond. The author’s note describes the pond as something that would not exist without a 2013 article about exotic fish taking over the basement of an abandoned Bangkok mall. That article supplied the fishpond’s originating image; it was not the model for the station itself.
Real-World Inspiration
The station is loosely based on a disused station in Sydney, described in the author’s note as beautiful and ghostly. The note thus distinguishes the location’s architectural inspiration from the source behind its fishpond: the Sydney station informs the setting, while the Bangkok-mall article prompted the presence of the fish. The author adds, jokingly, that they never broke into the Sydney station.
